Virginia Hamilton is probably best known for her Standalone Novels. Hamilton attended Antioch College, The Ohio State University and the New School University’s School of Social Research. I think Makoto’s comparison nails why Urasawa’s version works so well. ![]() Taking their work and attempting to change it can come across as an act of hubris. In the back matter for “Pluto” Volume 1, Osamu’s son, Makoto, compares Urasawa’s adaptation to the various covers of Beatles songs: “Countless covers have been made of Beatles songs, right? The Crakers are humanoid creatures created by Crake who live harmoniously in the Paradise project. During the novel, she becomes both Snowman and Crake’s lover. As a young woman after being sold by her mother, Oryx is sold from one man to the next until she is found in a locked garage. It is unclear whether she is the child sex slave that both Jimmy and Crake become obsessed with. When Jimmy and Glenn are young they regularly frequent sites detailing executions, assisted suicides, and child pornography. Glenn spirals throughout the novel into the evil genius and mad scientist character. ![]() His unique ideas coupled with being an extraordinary geneticist lead him to create the humanoids known as the Crakers. Glenn is a brilliant student that goes on to study genetics at the prestigious Watson-Crick institute. I mean, I get liking the chase, I also get feeling very attracted to someone but for this absolute fascination to count as believable, I need more. ![]() And considering this man has been with so many women, all kinds of women really, because of his career, it makes little sense that one day he sees her and bam without knowing anything about her he is enthralled. ![]() The hero’s fascination with her is very hard to understand because there was nothing to kickstart it. Like 600 pages long and after reading 200 pages, I feel like I should be somewhere past the second half of the story but no. First of all, I feel like I read 70% of what a normal book with this plot usually is like. ![]() |
